Preparing for Kindergarten

  • A student looks at booksSending your child to kindergarten is an exciting time, but families often have questions about preparing their child for school, creating a smooth transition and what to expect from the school before classes start.  Below are events to look for leading up to sending your student to Kindergarten and links to resources that may help families prepare for the transition.

    Kindergarten Roundup
Each January, Omaha Public Schools start to communicate with families regarding Kindergarten Roundup. Kindergarten Roundup is a time for incoming kindergarten students to visit their future school, see their classroom and meet the staff of their school. Kindergarten Roundup lasts approximately two hours. Be sure to check back for more details.

    Preparing for School to Start
In late July/early August of each fall, you will begin to get information from your child's school. If your child is eligible for transportation, you will receive your transportation letter approximately one week before school starts.

    Back to School Night
Each fall, schools offer a Back to School Night. This is an opportunity for families to visit their school, see their classroom, bring in school supplies. Families who have a child that walks to school may use this as an opportunity to ensure their child knows what way to walk to school.
